PROJECT “ORTSNETZ” STARTED TO STUDY POWER GRID BENEFICIAL LOCAL ENERGY MARKETS, FUNDED BY THE SWISS FEDERAL MINISTRY OF ENERGY

With a growing number of sustainable energy sources in the power system, distributed resources like PV, EV charging stations and H2 storage facilities play an increasing role. The OrtsNetz project aims to steer customer behavior in a local energy market via dynamic tariffs to optimize for both, fair cost distribution and power grid efficiency, with the goal to reduce peak demand. While such peer-to-peer trading between households in local markets has been shown to bring cost advantages and lead to increased self-consumption within a community, the potential of local coordination for power grid operation itself had so far remained largely unrealized. The collaboration between the Bits-to-Energy Lab at ETH Zurich, ETH’s Power Systems Laboratory and the city’s energy provider EKZ now receives funding from the Swiss Federal Ministry of Energy.
